shampoo is harming our health

Shampoos are generally made from a mixture of water, some form of foaming agent and a variety of other ingredients that combine to make a product that smells good, looks good and appears to do its intended job of cleaning hair. But some of the ingredients that are commonly used are harsh chemicals that have been shown to be potentially harmful to human health, either individually or in combination with other ingredients, and may pose various health risks ranging from skin conditions to cancer.

Listed below are a few of the more commonly used ingredients and just some of their potential health risks:

Propylene Glycol

  • Skin irritant
  • Potentially toxic or harmful to organ systems
  • May enhance absorption of other chemicals into the body via the skin
  • Potential immune system toxicity, skin toxicity and allergies

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or SLS

  • Potentially toxic or harmful to human health
  • Irritant to skin and eyes
  • May prevent proper development of children's eyes
  • Potential environmental toxin

Sodium Laureth Sulphate or SLES

  • Potentially toxic or harmful to human health
  • Skin and eye irritant
  • Regularly contaminated with Ethylene Dioxide and/or 1-4 Dioxane, both of which are extremely hazardous. They may cause cancer and reproductive problems and are toxic to most body systems.

DEA/TEA

  • Hazardous to human health
  • Potentially carcinogenic (may cause cancer)
  • Toxic to the immune system and may cause allergies
  • Toxic to organ systems
  • Regularly contaminated with nitrosamines, which may be toxic to the liver and digestive, reproductive and other body systems and may cause cancer

PEG

  • Potentially toxic or harmful to human health
  • Potentially toxic to organ systems
  • Often contaminated with Ethylene Dioxide and/or 1-4 Dioxane (see SLES above)

Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and profits are the motivation for many companies. It is safe to say that human health and safety are not priorities for the companies that use these ingredients.
